II. Plot

The River is a gifted human roleplay based on the ideas of Dark Visions by LJ Smith, X-Men, and of course - the ideas of our members! Our plot is driven by our members and left fairly open for members to come up with subplots to make it interesting! It isn't required that you have any knowledge about Dark Visions (though it's a great book) or X-Men, because we only use the ideas that are pretty common already.


Whether through genetic mutation or laboratory experiments, certain humans have acquired gifts, or powers, through the modification of their genetic code. Their powers range greatly, and it seems as though anything is possible. The existence of these "gifted" humans is kept secret within their community, as everyone knows how public awareness could affect them. Perhaps it wouldn't end with the elimination of the modified human - but it would never end in the gifted human's favor. Though gifted humans are found everywhere, exposure always threatens them and plagues them with fear. There is only one place deemed safe enough for the gifted human to use their gifts freely.

Riverwood, Colorado, is an isolated town built around a river winding through a mountain valley. It is surrounded by thick forest and seen as a haven to gifted humans, especially those on the run. It is a place where one may simply disappear and live their live without fear for the most part. Ordinary humans are not allowed in the town, if they could even find it - Riverwood isn't marked on any maps, making it seem like it doesn't even exist. The only non-gifted humans allowed to enter the town is the family of those already living there or seeking refuge.

Despite what its citizens may think, Riverwood isn't completely safe. There is an evil in their town operating right under their noses. Riverwood Industries and Riverwood Counseling, owned by the Ramsay family, provide jobs and counseling to those who need them. However, only for their own gain do the Ramsays provide these services. The family is power-hungry and has access to a crystal that may give them the power they crave.

This crystal has a dark, unsettling aura. When placed upon one's forehead, it creates extreme pain and causes one to change. Their will is easily bent by the crystal-holder, making this crystal a vital part of the Ramsay's grab for power. When someone desirable attends a session at Riverwood Counseling, the crystal is used in the therapy session, often with hypnosis so the victim is unsuspecting. One thing the Ramsays are not aware of is the crystal's true power - the ability to turn one into a modern-day vampire, without the blood. Only after several "therapy" sessions is a gifted human changed into a life-sucking vampire. Rather than drink blood, these vampires drain life energy.


While roleplay at The River is based in Riverwood, other places are available for posting. While there is a board for 'anywhere', for the sake of uniformity, we ask that your character live in one of the main areas that have boards and leave the anywhere board for travelling. Other than Colorado, our main location is California.
